SAP equips students to thrive with Skills @ Work programme

At SAP, our purpose is to help the world run better and improve people’s lives. Core to this, is our corporate social responsibility mission, to equip young people with the skills they need to thrive in the digital economy.

Skills @ Work is an initiative run by Business in the Community Ireland, as part of the Schools’ Business Partnership, to support students in communities that are at risk of disadvantage and social exclusion. By matching one secondary school (from one of these communities), with one large business (like SAP), Skills @ Work aims to provide 5th year students with first-hand insights into the world of work, and the opportunity to consider the variety of career and study options open to them when they leave school.

Since 2014, SAP has partnered with St. Farnan’s Post Primary School in Prosperous, Co. Kildare to bring the Skills @ Work curriculum to life, for 30+ students each year.

The programme has 6 modules* that are delivered across the academic year, covering:

1. CV and interview preparation
2. Mock interviews with feedback
3. Overview of SAP
4. A “day in the life” of employees in SAP
5. Site visit to SAP’s offices in Citywest (Dublin)
6. On conclusion of the programme, the class present their learnings to parents and teachers.

* Plus an optional module to learn about team work, business etiquette and customer service etc.

Core to Skills @ Work is the opportunity for the students to learn and practice vital life skills, such as CV preparation and mock interviews, in a safe and supportive environment, helping to set them up for success when they leave school.

Always keenly anticipated, each year the students get to take a tour of SAP’s offices and innovation lab in Citywest (Dublin) and experience our collaboration tools and technologies. By showcasing a “day in the life” of our employees, students start to imagine what their own future may look like, working in a global technology company like SAP.

Over 50 SAP employees from across the business volunteer annually to participate in Skills @ Work, acting as role models for students, by sharing their pathway to education and invaluable career insights, in an engaging, inspiring and interactive way. Research has shown that if a student sees the link between education and work, they are more likely to remain in school longer, and complete their education to Leaving Certificate level and beyond, giving them the best possible start in realising their potential.

We know that providing opportunities to “give back” to local communities is important to our employees. Skills @ Work enables them to do so in a meaningful, engaging and rewarding way. Additionally, programmes like Skills @ Work can help employees to develop their coaching, communications, presentation and leadership skills. The number of employees who continue to volunteer year-on-year with the programme is a testament to the value and benefit they give, and receive in return.
