Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Diversity and Equality Working Group

The Department's Diversity and Equality Working Group developed an Action Plan on Equality & Diversity which was launched by the Management Board In May 2018. Actions are ongoing and are being/are to be implemented in 2018 - 2019.

The Diversity and Equality Working Group focuses on two of the four dimensions of Corporate Social Responsibility, namely The Community and The Workplace.

One of the core aims of the Action Plan, is to ensure that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is an employer of choice that encourages a workplace culture where all employees feel welcome and supported irrespective of their gender, orientation, race or ethnic status. The initiatives in this regard includes looking at accessibility of the language used by the Department in its work, improving accessibility of DFAT properties and workspaces as well as addressing the possibility of unconscious bias in the allocation of assignments to officers during the lifetime of their career.

Another key focus of the Action Plan is to ensure that as a Department we are reflective of the society we represent. The plan encourages sensitivity and diversity proofing of the Department’s service provision to citizens by addressing accessibility needs and acknowledging the increasingly diverse profile of the Irish population and the necessity of non-discrimination. In addition it supports diversity in the promotion of Ireland in terms of trade, culture, education etc. overseas to reflect the diversity in contemporary society.
